Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry involves treatment that is purely esthetic driven. In other words, the procedures involved are done to improve the look of someone’s smile and overall appearance. The first and most important step in treatment is determining whether or not the patient is happy with his or her smile, and then collecting enough data to make an accurate diagnosis. Improving cosmetics can be something as simple as tooth whitening in order to transform a smile from stained yellow to pearly white.

A common cosmetic treatment is closing spaces (diastemas) between teeth, either with or without the use of orthodontics. If someone needs more immediate results without the hassle of wearing braces, one of the more conservative approaches is called resin bonding. This is done by bonding white filling material between teeth in a way that closes the space without cutting away tooth structure. Sometimes, if spaces are too large, it may be necessary to do resin bonding and orthodontic movement to achieve the same results. Other methods for closing spaces include porcelain veneers, which involves cutting a very thin layer away from the front of the tooth, and bonding a new porcelain “cover” onto the tooth.

The most aggressive treatment would be full coverage crowns, which would require the entire tooth to be prepared. The majority of cosmetic procedures involve the anterior teeth, otherwise known as the “esthetic zone”.
